South Street Seaport
From the War of American Independence to the rise of the New York as a global metropolis in the 19th Century, the East River and the seaport located along South Street has played a larger than life role in the history of New York and the United States. Several buildings in the South Street Seaport Historic District are considered to be some the oldest standing structures in Manhattan, from homes of colonial-era merchants to 19-century dens of ill-repute. Docked along the South Street Seaport Museum’s pier is the British-built 19-century sailing cargo ship Wavertree, one of the last ships of her kind. Wavertree harks back to New York’s trading links with Great Britain, especially the port of Liverpool. Together the buildings and ships of the seaport along South Street have a big story to tell.
