Dramatic landscapes and sacred sites have lured artists and pilgrims to the western shores of Europe for
centuries. Today the new and exciting architecture of Spain, Portugal and France is an added draw.
In response to many requests for a longer voyage aboard the sailing yacht Sea Cloud II, we have
arranged this “Grand Tour” cruise along the Iberian and French coasts. Those with more limited time may wish
to join one of this program’s two segments: Cádiz to Bilbao from May 5 to 16, 2008, or Bilbao to Paris from
May 15 to 25, 2008.
During the first portion of the program, we are pleased to be accompanied by Jared Goss, Associate
Curator of Nineteenth-Century, Modern and Contemporary Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Distinguished Met lecturer Olivier Bernier, a noted art historian and author, will join us in Bilbao for the
second section of the trip. We will also be accompanied by author and garden desgner Patrick Bowe.
Begin with three nights in the Andalusian city of Seville, crowned by the royal Alcázar Palace and
massive Gothic cathedral. Embark Sea Cloud II in Cádiz for an unparalleled 14-day voyage. In Lisbon, visit the
impressive Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and encounter Roman and Arab ruins in the ancient Alfama
district. Cruise the Portuguese coast to Porto, known for its wine trade, and from La Coruña drive through the
countryside to the pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela. In the Basque country discover Frank Gehry’s
modern marvel, the Guggenheim Bilbao.
Continue along the western shore of France, enjoying scenic landscapes and charming small cities.
Skirt the Bay of Biscay to the village of Pauillac, from whose vineyards come the world-famous wines of
Mouton Rothschild and Lafite. Step ashore near the medieval fortifications of La Rochelle, once a
Huguenot stronghold, and enter the picturesque walled city of St. Malo, home to the best crepes in France.
Disembark in Honfleur, cradle of Impressionism. Spend two
nights in Paris discovering its new and exciting museums.
Life aboard the magnificent Sea Cloud II has no
comparison. Her friendly staff, luxurious staterooms and fine
dining create an ambiance of relaxed elegance.
For those joining the first section of the program, an
optional postlude in San Sebastián is arranged following
arrival in Bilbao. For those participating in the second half
of the program, a prelude in Bilbao at the stunning Marqués
de Riscal is planned.
Won’t you join us?
Sincerely yours,
